Senior Legal Director, Legal & Risk Management

This role is responsible and accountable for providing legal support for the Company’s operations in Japan. Candidates must be individuals with a highly business-focused approach and have excellent written and verbal skills. This role will negotiate and draft customer and vendor contracts and provide support to the business units across the Company. He or she will participate in and contribute to the development and on-going review of relevant policies, processes, guidelines and procedures. The ability to understand risks, balance competing interests, and provide appropriate advice is critical to success for this position. The work requires cross-functional collaboration within a highly matrixed, multi-national corporate environment. Candidates must have the ability to interact effectively and professionally with all levels of management, across functions, regions and global teams.
It is expected that the Legal Director will use his/her confident, appealing personality and professionalism to establish productive relationships with our internal and external customers and business partners and foster a customer-focused approach with respect to the performance of all Legal & Risk Management responsibilities both in Japan and across the Company.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
• Review, draft and negotiate commercial agreements with customers and vendors.
• Provide high quality legal advice in support of the Company’s operations in Japan.
• Advise on employment law related matters and ensure that all related policies and practices in Japan are compliant with prevailing laws & regulations.
• Provide support to the Company with respect to compliance with clinical trials, drug development regulations.
• Manage risks through counseling and practical application of Company policies, processes, guidelines and procedures.
• Proactively support the Company’s ethics and compliance activities.
• Supervise and conduct internal investigations and assist with the implementation of any corrective and/or disciplinary action.
• Actively supervise the activities of outside legal counsel where necessary.
• Some business travel (domestic and international) will be required.
• Undertake the full range of duties relevant to the management and development of his/her direct reports to ensure performance meets and/or exceeds the Company’s business goals/objectives.

Establish and maintain an understanding of the Company’s goals and objectives and proactively work to support the successful achievement of its goals and objectives.

Qualifications

SKILLS
• Exceptional legal drafting and negotiating skills.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to take a business and customer-focused approach to work.
• Excellent at developing relationships with Company colleagues and customers.
• Strong leadership skills.
• Independent worker and self-starter focused on proactively supporting successful achievement of the Company’s goals and objectives.
• Team-oriented.
• Able to effectively manage direct reports and build a high-functioning team.


It is important that he/she (1) enjoys commercial negotiation, (2) establishes and maintains strong relationships with Company colleagues and customers and (3) understands the Company’s goals and objectives and works diligently to successfully achieve them.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

• A fully qualified lawyer in Japan or US.


LANGUAGE SKILLS
• Fluent Japanese and English language skills.
• Knowledge of any additional language(s) a plus.

MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE
• Minimum of 8 years’ professional experience as an attorney, preferably a combination of law firm training and in-house experience in multinational companies.
• International work experience preferred, but not required.
